Green Railways – A Sustainable Active Tourism Product in Latvia

Green Railways are multi-day cycling and walking routes in Latvia, developed along former railway lines. The routes follow sections of the historic Riga–Tallinn railway line, including Skulte–Limbaži–Mazsalaca, as well as the narrow-gauge railway section Ainaži–Puikule–Valmiera, offering travellers the opportunity to explore Latvia’s small towns, diverse nature, and rich cultural heritage.

Nature and International Significance

The Green Railways network runs through the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve and Piejūra Nature Park, providing a scenic and peaceful environment for sustainable travel.

Several sections are part of the Council of Europe Cultural Routes, including Via Hansa, Santiago de Compostela, and the Iron Curtain Trail.

Awards and Recognition

In 2019, the Latvian Green Railways received the European Greenways Association (EGWA) Award, recognising it as one of the most outstanding greenway projects in Europe.

Activities and Accessibility

Green Railways are suitable for cycling, hiking, horse riding, and cross-country skiing in winter.

The routes mainly consist of gravel and forest roads, are clearly signposted, and have no steep ascents or descents. They are flat, safe, and of moderate difficulty, making them suitable for a wide range of travellers, including families.

Historical Background

The Riga–Tallinn railway line was opened in 1981 and included the section Skulte–Limbaži–Aloja–Mazsalaca. After Latvia regained independence, the railway was divided between Latvia and Estonia.

Due to economic reasons, passenger services were discontinued in 1996 and the tracks were dismantled.

Since 2014, thanks to initiatives by municipalities and non-governmental organisations, the former railway corridors have gradually been transformed into Green Railways, creating a high-quality sustainable tourism product focused on nature and active travel.

This tourism product was developed under the leadership of the Vidzeme Tourism Association, in collaboration with Vidzeme tourism entrepreneurs and partners, with the aim of creating sustainable and export-ready tourism offerings in the region.
